Scholarships in South Korea

Korean tuition is moderate, and international students pay the same fees as locals. That makes scholarships powerful: the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) can fund your whole degree, and university awards often cover 50% to 100% of tuition. Here is a clear map of GKS, university, regional and private funding.

Government Funded Scholarships

Fully or heavily funded by the Korean government – highly competitive, but transformational when secured.

Global Korea Scholarship - Undergraduate

DFAT-administered full scholarships for exceptional students from developing countries (Nepal included) committed to returning home and driving national development. Covers tuition, living costs, return airfare, OSHC, and an establishment allowance.

Global Korea Scholarship - Graduate

Government aid for international students pursuing Master’s or PhD programs in Korea. Applied for through the Korean embassy or directly through a participating university. Can cover full tuition, monthly allowance, research allowance, and airfare.

Institutional Scholarships

Awarded directly by Korean universities – usually merit-based, language-based (TOPIK), or aligned to specific course strengths. Broader access than government scholarships, applied for alongside your admission.

Admission & Presidential Scholarships

The top-tier institutional awards – a university’s flagship scholarships, typically covering up to 100% of tuition. Highly competitive; awarded to a small number of exceptional applicants each intake, such as Korea University’s Anam Global Scholarship and Yonsei’s UIC Admissions Scholarship.

Merit & TOPIK-Based Scholarships

The most commonly awarded category – partial tuition waivers based on academic performance or Korean language level. Most top and mid-tier universities, including Konkuk, Kyung Hee and Sogang, offer these across a wide range of programs.

Frequently Asked Question

Not compared with the US, UK or Australia. International students generally pay the same tuition as Korean students. Public universities average around KRW 4 million per semester and private universities around KRW 6.5 million, with higher fees for medicine, engineering and arts. Scholarships can cut these costs by half or more.

It is competitive, but achievable with strong preparation. Undergraduate awards number only a few hundred a year, while graduate awards number around 2,000, so graduate applicants with a clear study plan and research direction often have better odds. TOPIK scores add selection points, and choosing the right track matters.

Not for GKS: no Korean or English test is required to apply, and selected scholars complete a one-year Korean language programme first. For university awards, however, a higher TOPIK level often unlocks larger tuition waivers, so learning Korean early pays off.

Most look at your admission results, GPA and language ability. Some, like Yonsei's UIC awards, require you to maintain a minimum GPA each semester, and others require a minimum number of credits to keep the award. Always read the renewal conditions.

Yes, especially in science and engineering. Universities such as KAIST offer full tuition plus a monthly stipend to selected international graduate students, and many students also earn support through research assistantships in professors' labs.
