Many Nepali students do not begin their New Zealand education journey with one final degree. Some need an English-language course, foundation programme or vocational qualification before progressing to a bachelor’s degree or another higher-level programme.
The New Zealand Pathway Student Visa supports this type of planned progression. Instead of applying for a separate student visa at every stage, an eligible student may complete up to three consecutive programmes under one visa.
From 20 July 2026, New Zealand made the visa more flexible. The changes expanded lower-level study combinations, increased the permitted English-language component in certain pathways and gave school students more flexibility when moving into tertiary education.
Students must still show that their study plan is genuine, financially realistic and academically connected.

Year 12 and Year 13 students must still explain their intended subject area, qualification level and tertiary provider when applying. However, updated conditions may allow them to change disciplines at the same approved provider without applying for a completely new student visa.
The changes may also help students who need English preparation, foundation study or a vocational qualification before progressing further. The programmes must still form a logical education pathway.
How the Pathway Student Visa Works?
A Pathway Student Visa can cover up to three consecutive programmes over a maximum period of five years. A student may also have a break of up to 16 weeks between programmes.
A possible pathway could be:
English course → Foundation programme → Bachelor’s degree
Another could be:
Vocational certificate → Advanced qualification → Higher-level programme
Approval depends on whether the courses create credible progression and whether the student can meet the entry requirements for each stage.
The visa may remain valid for up to three months after the final programme finishes, provided the total visa period does not exceed five years. Passport validity may result in a shorter visa.
Who May Qualify?
A Nepali student may be eligible when they:
- Have offers for a valid study pathway
- Plan to study with approved Pathway education providers
- Can pay tuition fees, living expenses and outward travel
- Meet health, character and insurance requirements
- Genuinely intend to study in New Zealand
- Can explain how the programmes support their career plans
An offer of place does not guarantee visa approval. Immigration New Zealand assesses the complete application, including finances, study history, immigration record and reasons for choosing the pathway.
Approved Providers and Course Conditions
Not every New Zealand education provider can offer a Pathway Student Visa programme. The proposed courses must be offered by providers participating in the official pilot.
Students should check the current approved-provider list before paying tuition fees. When more than one provider is involved, the institutions may need to issue a joint offer or support letter showing each programme and its planned dates.
The pathway should demonstrate clear academic progression. Immigration New Zealand may question an application if the courses are unrelated, do not match the student’s previous education or offer no clear educational benefit.
Students generally need to show that tuition fees have been paid for the first programme or first year, whichever is shorter. They must also provide a credible plan for paying for the remaining study.
Applicants outside New Zealand may request approval in principle before paying tuition fees, but the visa cannot be issued until acceptable payment evidence is provided.
Financial Requirements for Nepali Students
Under current Immigration New Zealand guidance, students undertaking tertiary, English-language or other non-compulsory study generally need:
- NZD 20,000 for each year of study lasting one year or longer
- NZD 1,667 for each month when the programme is shorter than one year
Primary and secondary school students generally need NZD 17,000 per year or NZD 1,417 per month for shorter periods.
These amounts cover living costs only. Tuition fees and outward-travel costs are additional.
Financial evidence may include bank statements, fixed deposits, education loans, scholarships, income evidence and source-of-funds documents. Large or recent deposits should be supported by evidence showing where the money came from.
Applicants from Nepal may also be asked to use the Funds Transfer Scheme.
Work Rights During the Pathway
A Pathway Student Visa may allow a student to work up to 25 hours per week during study and full-time during eligible scheduled holidays.
Work rights depend on the programme and the conditions printed on the eVisa. If only a later programme qualifies for work rights, the student may need a variation of conditions before beginning work.
Students should never assume that every Pathway Student Visa provides work rights.
Changing Courses or Education Providers
The 2026 changes offer greater flexibility, but students cannot freely change any course or provider.
Changing to another education provider usually requires a new student visa. Moving to a lower-level qualification may also require a new application.
A change to a same-level or higher-level course with the same provider may be possible through a variation of conditions. Eligible school students may have more flexibility to change their intended discipline at the same approved provider.

A Fee Paying Student Visa may be more suitable for students enrolling in one programme, those uncertain about their next qualification or those choosing a provider outside the Pathway pilot.
Benefits and Limitations
The main benefit is that a student may complete several connected programmes without applying for a new visa after every course. It also supports a structured, long-term study plan.
However, only approved providers can participate, the pathway must be planned in advance and changing providers generally requires a new visa.
The visa does not guarantee entry into later programmes, employment, permanent residence or a Post Study Work Visa.
